The Centre for Fire Safety Engineering Research and Technology (FireSERT) combines a multi-disciplinary team of scientists, engineers and psychologists in a unique laboratory facility in Ireland and within the University sector of the UK.

The three core areas of current activity in FireSERT are fire dynamics and materials, structural fire engineering, and human behaviour in fire. FireSERT staff have attracted significant project funding from UK research councils, government, the European Union and industry. Externally funded projects are: evacuation and human behaviour in very tall buildings; the safety issues of using hydrogen for replacement of petrol; the design, building safety related to flashover and facade fires, assessment and evaluation of fire safe nanoparticle materials including the potential for nano-engineered materials and the performance of structures (cellular beams) and materials in fire situations. Staff at FireSERT play an active role, both nationally and internationally, having developed extensive links and collaborations with other leading researchers from all over the world including the USA, Europe, Australia and the Far East.

Prof. Michael Delichatsios, Director of FireSERT, had successfully been selected as Chinese Academy of Sciences Visiting Professorship for Senior International Scientists of 2009-2010, in order to take cooperative research and exchange for 7 months staying at SKLFS. During October~December 2010, Prof.Delichatisios had finished his first period of visiting time here, gave 3 academic speeches and discussed scientific research with every group of SKLFS. He also had carried out experiment together with Dr. Longhua Hu’s research group on enclosure flame ejection behavior and spill plume characteristics.
