Abstract: A full-scale reconstruction of a heritage dwelling fire was carried out by using numerical simulation method to complete fire investigation. The present paper gives reasons and advantages of applying CFD tools to conduct fire reconstruct ion. According to the actual building geometry and material thermal properties, a scenario model was set and several cases were conducted. The simulation results give spread of fire and movement of smoke. Profiles of temperature and different gas concentrations of key sites where casualties were found are shown. By comparing simulation results with investigation collections and testimony of witnesses, investigation becomes more complete and reliable. Results show that fire spread quickly and generates large amounts of smoke. An optimal protection strategy with water spray system is given and corresponding simulation is conducted. Conclusions are made that water spray can effectively extend ASET. Methods to retard fire spread and reduce Fire damage are found. Suggestions for the ancient architectural protection are proposed.
