Abstract: Magnetorheological (MR) fluids have wide potential application in smart devices due to their powerful shear stress. However, a problem pressing for solution in MR fluids is their poor sedimentation stability. Polymer-modified magnetic particles may be a good solution to reduce the subsiding of particles for their good compatibility with organic dispersed medium. In this paper chemical modification and fabrication of composite particles for metallic iron and its oxides, in particular the studies of our group on these particles with core-shell structure and micron- or submicron-size, are summarized and the performances of corresponding MR fluids are also discussed.
