Abstract: In order to explore the characteristic of flame-spreading over thickness charring fuel sheets under quiescent environments, wood sheets have been selected as typical charring materials. The behavior of fire spreading over wood sheets has been observed and recorded by using of a schlieren system combined with a CCD camera and computer system. Sequences of the schlieren images clearly showed that the fire plume over the sample surface can be divided into three parts: strong plume, transition part and buoyancy plume. Two parameters are measured from the schlieren images to describe the fire plumes features. One is the length of the generated combustive gas ahead the flame, the other is the angle between the stream of the plume and the sample surface. The relationship between variations of the parameters and extinguish behaviors of flame spreading downward over the charring solid is discussed.
